The following is a translation of the Race Rules & Important Reminders section from the official Shinetsu Five Mountains Trail 110km race website.



  1. Race ranking is based on finish time.
  2. There will be three cut-off points along the course. If you do not make the cut-off times, you will not be able to continue the race and must follow the instructions provided by race staff to make your way down the mountain.
    -Cut-off #1:   Kurohime Kougen Parking Lot #2 <4A; 51.5km>
    15:30 (10 hours after race start)
    -Cut-off #2:  Sasagamine Kougen Green House <5A; 63.1km>
    18:00 (12.5 hours after race start) 17:30 (12 hours after race start)
    -Cut-off #3:   Guesthouse “Iwato”, Togakushi Ski Hill <8A; 92.3km>
    24:00 (18.5 hours after race start)
  3. The finish line cut-off time is at 3:30am the next day. If you cannot complete the race within this time limit, you will be required to stop racing. Please follow staff instructions to get down the mountain.
  4. You can be accompanied by a pacer between 5A (Cut-off point #2) and the finish line (a pacer is optional). The pacer can run with the racer but may not physically assist him/her (e.g. by pulling the racer's hands, pushing or pulling the racer's body, using a rope to pull the racer, etc.).
  5. The use of items such as trekking poles/branches/walking sticks is prohibited throughout the course.
  6. If you stop or drop out of the race in the middle of the course, you must report this to race staff so that we know that you are safe. If you fail to do so, you will be not be allowed to enter this race in the future.
  7. You may be asked to stop racing by race staff if you are not in good enough condition to continue.
  8. The race organizer may have to cancel the race if weather conditions deteriorate during the race.
  9. A racer will be disqualified for the following:
    - Failure to obey the rules and regulations or follow instructions by race staff.
    - Failure to meet the cut-off time limits.
    - You do not wear your race bib.
    - You litter along the course or damage the environment.
    - You declare false qualifications or break the race rules.




  1. Mandatory equipment: rainwear, headlamp (with extra batteries and light bulb) for running at night, bear bell and poison remover (there are insects and wild animals such as bees and bears in this region).
  2. Insurance:  You must carry a copy of your insurance policy with you.
  3. Health examination:  If you are 55 years or age or older, please get a health examination before the race.
  4. Racer check-in:  You will not be allowed to run if you are late for racer check-in (racer check-in located at Madarao Kougen "Heidi" Restaurant)
  5. Race cancellation:  The race may be cancelled by the organizer if it is determined that the race cannot safely continue due to earthquakes, wind/water damage, unexpected events and accidents. If the race is cancelled, you will be given the participation award but it will be up to the race organizer to determine whether a race fee refund will be able to be provided.
  6. Responsibility & liability:  Racers are responsible for their own well-being during the race. The race will provide emergency assistance in case of an accident but cannot be held responsible or liable.
  7. Rights to photographs/videos:  All rights to photographs, video footage and race results taken during the race and shown or broadcast in newspaper and magazine articles, television and the internet belongs to the race organization.
  8. Luggage storage:  You will be able to store luggage and belongings you don't need during the race in a storage area provided by the race. Please follow the instructions of race staff and make sure to keep any valuables with you during the race. The race organizer is not responsible for any losses or damage.
  9. Garbage:  You are responsible for taking home your own garbage.
